Props Master at Malmö Opera
Malmö Opera is the heart and voice of music drama in Skåne. The house was inaugurated in 1944 and is centrally located in the Öresund region, just 20 minutes from Copenhagen. The stage is one of the largest in Europe, and the amphitheater-style auditorium accommodates 1500 visitors. We perform classical, modern, and newly written music drama. Malmö Opera has over 285 permanent employees and 500–700 engaged in productions each season. During a season, we produce over 300 performances for the main stage as well as for children’s, youth, and touring activities.
We offer you employment in an inspiring environment where we work together to create optimal conditions for our audience to experience music theater in all its breadth. We believe that a diversity of skills creates the best conditions for Malmö Opera’s work climate, creativity, and quality. Do you want to help create magic on Malmö Opera’s main stage? Are you a creative and communicative person with a focus on the audience?
We are now looking for a Props Master for our stage department. You will be part of our technical section and work closely with stage, lighting, sound, and decoration workshops in productions. Welcome with your application!
Job Description
Within the stage department, there are several professional groups that together form technical teams for each production. Each function is responsible for its area. The stage manager is your immediate supervisor, and the technical masters lead the daily work on stage.
As a Props Master at Malmö Opera, you will be responsible for sourcing, adapting, and managing props, as well as serving during performances.
In the preparatory work for a production, you will participate in technical meetings and collaborate closely with the set designer and director to ensure that the props function artistically and practically.
Even seemingly simple items may require collaboration between several departments. You identify this early in the process and plan the sourcing together with your colleagues.
You are responsible for the props within given time and budget constraints. We primarily use props from our inventory, but the work largely involves purchasing and, to some extent, renting, borrowing, and small-scale manufacturing. If necessary, we use 3D printers and scanners. Larger and more complex objects are built by the decoration workshop’s prop makers or outsourced.
The first rehearsals take place in the auditorium, and this is your first deadline. Once on stage, you are responsible for ensuring that the right props are in the right place for the right scene. The work is multi-technical, which means that you may sometimes perform tasks outside your own area, and colleagues can assist as needed.
You are responsible for documentation that facilitates your colleagues and future reprises. During the rehearsal process, new requests may arise, and you will assess what is reasonable based on work time and cost.
After the premiere, you are responsible for the continuous oversight of the props so that performances can proceed without interruption.
Qualifications
You are structured, solution-oriented, and have a sense of order. You are service-oriented but can set boundaries when required. With good foresight, you can anticipate challenges before they become problems. You thrive in dialogue with artistic teams and are not afraid to raise obstacles or the need for collaboration across departmental boundaries. You are handy, have good material knowledge, and an understanding of style, form, and design. Knowledge of minor pyrotechnic equipment and weapon replicas is a plus. The work is physically demanding, and good physical condition is a prerequisite. You are curious, want to develop, and enjoy finding creative solutions. The working hours are largely scheduled for evenings and weekends.
To succeed in this position, the following is required:
- Experience working on stage.
- Craft skills in various types of materials, not just wood and metal.
- Relevant education for the profession or equivalent work experience.
- Good computer skills and the ability to quickly familiarize yourself with new computer systems.
- High collaboration ability and ease in understanding other people's needs.
- Driver's license (B)
- Good Swedish and English in speech and writing.
Desirable competencies and qualifications:
- Experience with inventory systems, such as Trail.
- Experience with 3D printers.
- Lift certification (mobile work platforms).
- Certificates for Hot Work or Flammable Work.
- Rigging course for stage and theater.
- Language skills beyond Swedish and English.
- Certificate for pyrotechnics.
- Completed course on Chemical Risk Sources (e.g., thermosetting plastics).
Employment Conditions
The position is a permanent full-time employment with a 6-month probationary period. Working hours are largely determined by the planning of productions and are scheduled for days, evenings, and weekends.
